409 - JUL 11
BEGINS
Donuk reveals his Minerva visitation and the warning about Ragnar and the Demon. He is given a Remove Disease and Remove Curse spells by the Goddess and uses the Remove Disease to cure Wotan's Bog Rot.
At dawn on the July 11th the party guards,Taryyn, Aileil and Alaricus are surprised to see two figures with six horses standing 20' away from the camp. Moving up they see that the two figures are Picts. With them is a shaman, named Illirik, who is busy tending a brazier and muttering some sort of incantation. The party invite the Picts into the camp. They reveal that they are members of the village that was trashed by the Hill Giants. They want to give the party the six horses as a thank you for slaying one of the Giants. Illirick, using what appears to be a Blink Spell, appears in the camp and briefs the party on developments. He reveals that the Irish Warband has headed off to the north. Vincenzo, using his magical knowledge, assesses that some sort of quite powerful magic must have been used to allow the Picts to get so close to the camp undetected and assumes, illirick is responsible. Both he and Alaricus decide that the Picts are genuinely friendly, though they appear very nervous and keep looking about. The party accept the horses. They keep all good condition horses and redistribute their loot and give the Picts the slower and less useful animals.
The party then move south - leaving at 0700 on July 11, guessing they are about 75 miles from Hadrian's Wall. The Picts offer to provide a flanking scouting group to help protect the party.
The party travel for eight hours, covering 32 miles without incident. Stopping at 1600, they make camp.
Resting until midnight, the party move off on July 12. They travel until 0800 and again travel 32 miles peacefully. They rest until 1600 then move off again.
At 1700 they come to a crumbling tower on top of a hill. The tower has a large metal wheel at its top. Alaricus identifies it as an old abandoned Roman tin mine. Anxious to reach the Wall, the party ignore the mine (!!!!) and keep going.
At 1900 they come in sight of the wall. The nearest fort looks empty. The gate beneath it is closed and the road way leading to it is overgrown and hasn't been used for a long time. Aradec and Aileil climb over the Wall and let the rest of the party through. Based on carvings on the fort, the party work out they are about three miles to the west of Fort Vitellus. They decide to rest at the empty fort which looks like it has been abandoned for quite some time.
The party move out at dawn on July 13. They think it is about 50 miles to Eboracum. After travelling for 25 miles they come to the waystation that some of the party stayed at when they went to Fort Vitellus about three weeks ago.
The way station has 10 fresh horses. In the way station are a small number of merchants and Roman soldiers. Aileil tries to enter the station with Wotan, but is politely told the the wolf can't come in. In high dudgeon the Druid decides to stay outside with his furry friend.
The party enjoy a hot meal and a bath and decide stay the night. Food is taken out to the Druid who sleeps outside. Aradec talks to the people in the station to get a feel for recent developments. He hears tales of an Irish warband beyond the Wall which has caused some concern, but the Warband has not crossed the Wall yet. The disappearance of the PCs from Fort Vitellus is commented on, but there is no indication of any blame being placed on the Party. It appears that reinforcements have been sent recently to Fort Vitellus.
At dawn on July 14, the party move out, taking the fresh horses with them,
By midday they reach Eboracum.
The party report to the garrison commander (Trebellius) who welcomes them back. The party give him a detailed debrief of their activities over the last three weeks. Trebellius expresses his gratitude for the party's efforts and grants them leave from 15 to 21 July. He reveals that the Romans are aware that Guilod is active and are keeping an eye on her minions. There is no intention of sending any more patrols out after her or her troops though action will be taken if the Wall is crossed.
A senior pay clerk is then summoned. The party learn that they are each owed about 420gp, but there is a shortage of coin at the moment. Pay can be provided in kind (salt, grain, fish and cheap wine). It turns out that Donuk has disappeared from the troop rosters (having been absent for about two years). the records are updated and Donuk is welcomed back.
Following this meeting Ailiel calls on Abiorix, the senior Druid in Eboracum to see what can be done about raising the dead Leprechaun. Abiorix does a deal with the Temple of Jupiter (talking to the High Priest, Demetrius) and has the Leprechaun raised using a True Resurrection spell. This is done free of charge. The Leprechaun is extremely grateful and says he owes the party a boon. He briefs the party on what happened to him. He was engaged in watching the evil party that was pursuing the PCs. He reveals the following about the evil party. Its member are:
- Ekart, a Kobold Warlock (part of the party the PCs ambushed). Unpleasant, spends a lot of time muttering to himself.
- Ariadne, a female High Elf Illusionist (also a survivor of the ambush). Very close to the other Wizard.
- Glarendon, a male Elf Wizard. He had the hawk familiar and became noticeably ill after losing the hawk. Seems to be a kind of leader. He and Ariadne on several occasions would wander off on their own and go into some sort of trance. They seemed to be communicating with someone - probably Guilod.
- Hudeoc, a Human Ranger who possesses a vial of poison that he caresses a lot. Irish, dark haired and sullen.
- Angmot, a Human Cleric of Arawn (God of War and Death). A perfumed blonde Briton of evil disposition.
- Gathag, a Goblin Rogue that the Leprechaun regards as the most dangerous of the group. Frequently would vanish from view and very good at spotting hidden enemies and hiding himself. It was he who spotted the Leprechaun. The Leprechaun ran off and hid, but the Goblin found him and knocked him out with a sap. He then brutally tortured the fey, burning his eyes out and eventually, killing him. Despite wounding the fey, the Goblin remained invisible.
The Leprechaun claims he refused to reveal anything about the PCs to the evil party (Alaricus senses that he told them everything as they tortured him to death). He says the evil PCs plan to slaughter all the fighter PC types, but want to capture the Psion aand Wizard and torture Aileil.
The Leprechaun notes that at least some of the evil PCs seem to be able to move large distances very quickly. Some of them also seem to have access to some sort of Dimension Door ability.
(NB, Vincenzo decides that the Leprechaun also has considerable unrevealed magical powers as he seems to be able to cover long distances very quickly himself - not normal Leprechaun abilties).
Summary of PC activity while on leave:
- Aradec to look for a Sage to find out how to hatch his Kobold egg and raise the brute.
- Alaricus to look for a Sage who can help him find other Psions.
- Donuk to keep in touch with the temple of Minerva and keep an eye on what the evil PCs are doing.
- Taryyn arranges with the garrison Quartermaster to sell a range of magic items.
- Party to explore with "Dominic's Emprium of Wonders" and some senior spellcasters the possiblity of selling various magic items.
- Party to look at options for finding a house as a place to live and craft items.
I am aware that Vincenzo and Hester have not had a chance to indicate what they are doing and await instructions.
Vincenzo when he levelled up rolled a 3 for hit points and selected the Alarm and Fireball spell.
The session ends during the period 15-21 July. The respective PCs are doing their own things and are operating at different times. Plenty of time to specify what they want to do.
