409 - Sep 4
The session opened at 1500 on the 4th September. Commick and Scorpius were on the first floor of the mansion, everyone else was in the cellar torturing Hudeoc.
A faint shimmering was detected by the party which indicated something was about to manifest.
Sure enough a Pit Fiend (!!!) materialised standing near Hudeoc and holding a scroll.
Although the party was not surprised, the Fiend moved with remarkable speed.
It read a scroll and a viciously powerful fireball (probably 12-15th level) struck Hudeoc and also hit Dell (who was about to execute the helpless prisoner) and Tarryn. Hudeoc was incinerated (he was already badly hurt even before the fireball) and Tarryn and Dell were left badly singed.
The party attempted to attack the Fiend and Alaricus even managed to hurt it with a Crystal Shard attack, though it was noted the abomination had strong damage resistance.
The Fiend, ignoring the party as it would a cloud of gnats, grabbed the corpse of Hudeoc. It seemed to carry out some sort of magical attack (later assessed as a soul draining process) then vanished.
Clearly someone was very keen that Hudeoc not provide the party with any further information.
The party (save the Cleric and Wizard) got a 200 xp bonus for this event and the previous interrogation.
When searching the cellar the party found a fragment of scalp with hair on it, presumably all that remains of Hudeoc.
The following day, Scorpius went to see the Wizard Marcus to inquire whether he could rent his library for a week to research a Write spell. Marcus agreed to do so for 1500gp.
Scorpius was shown the library, it was impressive with well over 700 tomes including several spellbooks. Marcus indicated that Scorpius could commence research on the 6th, but Marcus's familiar, a Homunculous named Bertie would have to supervise him at all times.
Meanwhile Tarryn went to visit a merchabnt named Torrence seeking a house near the mansion for use as a barracks.
Torrence (who seemed to be involved in a vast number of business activities) offered a property with 4 bedrooms, a kitchen, servants' quarters for 10 and a common room for a sale price of 3,000gp or 120gp monthly rental. Tarryn said he would rent at first and maybe buy later. He paid 480gp in advance. The lease will be in Victor's name.
Commick contacted some Dwarves to see if they could do some work in the cellar of the mansion and dig some tunnels into the sewer. A Dwarf engineer named Ludwig said he could do the work and could provide 6 Dwarven miners. He said he would require a diagram of what was sought and then he could work out costings and timings. He rejected any offer of magical assistance (eg Stone Shape) saying Dwarves didn't need party tricks to do construction work.
Aradec visited his Elven freind, Elendil, and invisted him to Tarryn's feast at the Palace. Elendil was delighted though fraught with indecision about what to wear (maybe something tight in midnight blue and silver?).
That night was the feast at the Palace. Tarryn inspected the arrangements before the feast started and was impressed by the vast quantity (and high quality) of the food as well as the array of fine wines.
The evening went well. Lemnos was a bit grumpy at first, but became more amicable as the night went on. Scorpius in conversation with Lemnos, discovered that the Mage was out of sorts because he was having trouble building a flying construct. It had stability problems and kept crashing. The Psion had a lengthy chat with the Wizard Durion about astral travel.
Iorex (the Ranger from the friendly party) over imbibed and got rather drunk. Fiona (friendly party Wizard and apparently the party leader) had a firm word with him to behave.
The dinner ended at midnight. Elendil (who had a FABULOUS time at the dinner) invited Aradec back to his place for a nightcap. Showing typical recklessness, Aradec accepted. The Elf served up some delicious (but very potent) apricot liqueur. Aradec had several glasses and suddenly realised his legs weren't working too well and he had double vision. He decided to call it a night. With some difficulty he staggered back to the mansion.
Scorpius wandered the streets hoping to be mugged, but the citizens of Trajectum were annoyingly law abiding that night.
Next day (6 September) Scorpius started his research at Marcus's library. If all goes well he expects to complete his work on the 12th.
Prior to that he looked at the items retrieved from the evil party Monk and Hudeoc and discerned the following:
- headband on Monk is a 3 charge Headband of Invisibility (mentally triggered)
- A silver amulet on Hudeoc depicting a half open door is a 2 charge Dimension Door item (also metally triggered).
Both of these items are new magic items not seen before.
Scorpius noticed that Bertie, while present in the library all the time, was more interested in looking at pornography than monitoring Scorpius. The Wizard cautiously checked the library shelves for any books on constructs and found two. "Dio's Manual of Constructs" and "Vaal's Guide to Construct Repairs".
Scorpius visited Lemnos to brief him on this discovery. Lemnos was well aware of Dio's book (a standard work which he has) but was most interested in seeing Vaal's book (apparently a rarity). Scorpius said he would see what he could do.
Aicen said he would go into the woods to seek a bear animal companion (which, subject to availability, should involve rituals over a period of 24 hours).
Victor has been instructed by Tarryn to recruit 4 guards.
Elendil dropped by the mansion to see Aradec (who was absent). Somewhat disappointed the Elf handed over a scroll as a thank you present to Aradec for "last night". To Scorpius's suprise, this turned out to be a Teleport spell.
