409 - Jun 28
After a planning session with Hyllor's Elves that made D-Day look like a spur of the moment thing, our intrepid adventurers took up ambush positions in a rather scenic forest glade.
Hester caught sight of something flying at great speed out of a tree next to the hidden Ent. Everyone immediately had raven-slaughtering fantasies flash through their minds.
Presently a Female Half Elf Ranger accompanied by a Forest Troll emerged at the edge of the clearing. They had come apparently unscathed through the traps. Both of them scanned the clearing carefully, obviously expecting trouble. They did not appear to see any of the adventurers.
Next the Cambion appeared with a Human Rogue at his side. The Cambion immediately began staring at the Ent. The Demon was obviously detecting something awry about the Ent, but was not sure what it was.
The adventurers stayed hidden and saw the rest of the evil party enter the clearing, a Kobold, a Female High Elf Wizard and a Half Orc/Half Fiend Barbarian.
At this point the party sprung the trap.
Silver Larch leapt into action, grappling the Ranger while animating two trees.
Taryyn ran forward while the Rogue and Ranger peppered the Wizard with arrows. Vincenzo cast a Web Spell entangling all of the enemy (and Taryyn) except the Forest Troll. Aileil's Wolf took on the Troll.
The enemy were caught flatfooted. The Ent and his barky chums grappled the Ranger, Cambion and Barbarian and proceeded to pound them into jelly. Taryyn, who had a Silence Spell cast on him by the Cleric, executed a manoeuvre of haunting beauty and awesome incompetence and slighlty hurt the Barbarian.
The High Elf Wizard suddently disappeared, but seemed to still be in the Web.
Alaricus fried the brain of the enemy Rogue who slumped insensate in the strannds of the web.
Alaricus summoned an Astral Construct, but it had difficulty finding targets.
Silver Larch, displaying a previously unsuspected sense of whimsy, hurled the Half Elf Ranger through the air. She smashed into Hester, knocking him prone. She was stunned and was quickly dispatched.
At this point it was pretty much game over, though things became momentarily interesting when the web was suddenly dispelled. This was something of a mystery as it appeared that neither the Kobold or Wizard should have been able to cast a Dispel Magic given that they were in the range of a Silence Spell.
The Cambion and Barbarian were both pounded into pulp by the Ent/Animated Trees. The Rogue had been slain by Psionics and the Ranger was a punctured corpse. The Forest Troll fought bravely but was felled by arrows and fearsome attacks from the Druid's Wolf.
Freed from the web, the Kobold made a run for it and disappeared into the treeline. No-one knew where the Wizard was.
Aileil and Taryyn went in pursuit. Aileil got a glimpse of something passing through the branches / leaves of a tree ahead. It looked as if the Kobold had taken flight.
The party stood somewhat stunned by the brevity and violence of the engagement. The Ent and his friends had been decisive - immune to mind control efforts by the Kobold, unbeatable in grapple combat and able to deal fearsome damage.
The party looted the bodies (but not the Cambion whose carcasse turned into foul smelling smoke though he did leave a fancy longsword behind).
The Ranger, Rogue and Barbarian each had 60 gp, Fly and Healing potions on them. The Barbarian had a +1 Great Axe and Masterwork Scale Mail. The Rogue had a +1 Short Sword and Masterwork Studded Leather Armour. The Ranger had a Masterwork Long bow and 4 x +1 Arrows.
The Druid went off in search of the Wizard and Kobold. Meanwhile the rest of the party along with their Elf guide (who spent the battle heroically cheering from cover), went to where Hyllor and her cohorts were camped. She greeted the adventurers warmly and praised them for their success. Vincenzo handed over the Staff of Command as agreed. Hyllor went off for half an hour to examine the staff. On return she said she did not want the staff and returned it.
She offered the party an Elf guide to help them on their way then bade the party a fond farewell.
Meanwhile the Druid discovered the tracks of the Wizard. She had passed through the forest then taken to the air. As he was pondering this the Druid saw a small reddish creature of demonic appearance standing on a branch about 20 yards away. It made a rude gesture then promptly vanished leaving a faint sulphurous smell. At this point the Druid and his wolfy chum decided to rejoin the party.
The rest of the party travelled until about 2000.
They made camp. While Taryyn and Hester were on watch two Forest Trolls attacked the camp. The battle was short and sharp and distinguished by Donuk using Sound Burst to good effect on one Troll (it spent most the battle stunned), though the other Troll seemed immune.
It was not, however, immune to the hail of blows that rained down it plus a Mind Thrust from the Psion.
With the Trolls vanquished, the party returned to bed and rested unti late the following morning.
