409 - May 10
The
campaign opened on 10 May 409 AD. Initial PCs were an Elf Fighter,
Human Psion, Human Spirit Shaman, Elf Bard and Human Ranger.
The party were briefed on their mission by their commander. Their task was to travel from Eboracum to Fort Vitellus on Hadrian's Wall to find out why the garrison there had not reported back to Eboracum for several weeks.
The party headed off, accompanied by 10 Legionnary Infantry and 10 Legionnary Archers, overnighting at a way station en-route. They encountered a group of 4 Centaurs who reported that they had seen a band of marauding Picts recently. The party reached Fort Vitellus on 12 May.
They found the Fort abandoned with 46 corpses (stripped) of Roman troops and the main gates leading into Pictland broken open. Missing from the Fort were Placentius (the commander), a Priest of Mithras named Probus and two legionnaries.
The party set about repairing the gates and deployed their Roman troops as a protecting garrison.
They noticed a rocky hill a mile away and the Psion sent his Psi-Crystal to reconnoitre the hill.
While there the Psi Crystal reported that a Hobgoblin was on the hill watching the Fort. The party headed off towards the hill and the Hobgoblin broke cover and fled towards another hill about a mile further on which there was a three storey old Roman tower. The Ranger felled the Hobgoblin with a long range bow shot.
The party reached the tower to find it garrisoned by Hobgoblins commanded by a tattooed Pictish warrior named Altidoc. The party demanded the release of the hostages and, in response, Atlidoc had the hostages' severed heads hurled at the party from the tower's battlements..
As the party moved off, having decided it was in no position to storm a defended tower, it encountered a hideous crone who taunted the party with its imminent doom. She introduced herself as Guilod and had a small mole perched on her shoulder. She then left the party executing a series of improbable leaps.
Session ended late on 12 May.
