409 - Aug 12
Starts the evening of 12 August.
The party sold the mithril skull, stone of interpretation and ring of Read Magic to Delius the sage for 3,000gp.
With that out of the way the party decided to examine the address of the Necromancer Hephor Apt.
It proved to be a modest two storey structure in the Merchant's Quarter. Aradec climbed onto the roof and proceeded to remove roofing tiles to effect an entry. Scorpius cast a Fly spell and prised open a shuttered window only to be on the receiving end of a vicious double slam attack from an Invisible Stalker that was posted right beside the window. The battered Wizard fell back and illuminated the creature with a Faerie Fire spell.
Meanwhile the rest of party watched approvingly as the Paladin burst through the back door. The others streamed after him into a living room/cum kitchen.
The stalker at the window closed the shutters then turned to glare at the hole in the ceiling being created by Aradec. It flew up and tried to grab whatever was damaging the roof (Aradec was invisible). It brushed against him but the thief managed to avoid being hurt. The stalker proceeded to replace the loose tiles.
Meanwhile the party thundered up the stairs. The Cleric cast Prayer and Invisibility Purge.
Smashing through the door to the upstairs room, the party were assailed by another stalker which became immediately visible (as did its Faerie Fire friend) due to the Cleric's spell.
Combat ensued but the stalkers never had a chance.
The party found themselves in a bedroom/combined study area. Papers were found which referred to purchases of chemical supplies (from Merchants called the Romero Brothers) and attempts to research an improved and more intelligent version of zombies. The party found assorted magical equipment which will reduce the cost of outfitting their wizard's laboratory from 1,000gp to 800gp.
Scorpius and Aradec noticed an exquisite miniature chest. While not radiating magic, Scorpius strongly suspected it was the link to a chest in the Ethereal Plane using the Leomund's Secret Chest spell. Scorpius recalls hearing about the spell during his student days, but is not sure how to use it.
(OOC - I'l process xp for this enounter for the Wizard, Cleric, Psion, Druid, Warblade, Fighter, Paladin and Rogue. The Warlock was not present).
On the 13th, after the Cleric had completed his prayers from 0800-0900, the party headed off for the Hobgoblin fort (only 12 miles away - a two hour trip).
Six miles from Trajectum, the party met another party of 10 PCs consisting of the following:
- Ioerex, a male Wood Elf Ranger
- Fiona, a female Half Elf Generalist Wizard
- Ulle, a female Human Monk.
- Dieter, a male Wood Elf Cleric of Birgit
- Harald, a Dwarf Fighter
- Hrolf, a Mountain Dwarf Cleric of Skodi
- Valerian, an extremely annoying male Human Bard with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of terrible songs of inordinate length
- Sidney, a male Rock Gnome Thief
- Syphax, a male Human Fighter
- Drusus, a male Human Sorceror
The party appeared to have seen a lot of action and had full looking saddle bags. They said they had been adventuring in Carcer Magnus which they described as a massive prison with 10 storeys above and below ground (20 in all) and crammed with nasties and loot. They intend to return.
They suggested the PCs catch up with them inTrajectum sometime over the next two weeks or so and then they rode on.
The party reached their rear FOB and rested until dusk. Then they moved forward to a new FOB about a mile from the fort. They lit cooking fires.
Around 1930 the Druid spotted a group of about 20 Hobgoblins heading to the campfire..
The Hobgoblins reached the FOB and turned out to be 20 standard Hobgoblin warriors led by a Sergeant. Scorpious unleashed a Fireball which annihilated all of the warriors and left the Sergeant badly singed. As it was clearly not his day, he surrendered. He turned out to be named Githak and he revealed the following information:
- The Hobgoblins are waiting for reinforcements from "up north" - no further details
- Gathorg has an annex in the leader's hut and has private talks with something he calls the "Servitor". No-one has seen this thing, but when it talks to him it speaks in a horrible voice in a strange language and weird lights flash from Gathorg's annex.
The party left the Sergeant in the custody of their NPCs (Archers/Healer/Tracker) then moved to a new site 2 miles frm the FOB and set up an ambush site.
While there the Cleric noticed massive footprints in some sand. Heavy breathing was heard coming from a copse. A Faerie Fire was cast on the copse but failed to do anything except light up a bush.
Next an invisible presence suddenly launched itself from the copse.
The party decided to relocate at this point and moved laterally away from the site, anticipating a patrol from the fort.
Sure enough, about an hour later, a skirmish line of 6 Hobgoblins came out of the fort and headed straight for the ambush site. The patrol blew horns repeatedly as it crept forward. Finding the ambush site abandoned, they ran back to the fort.
Scorpius positioned himself ao he could blast the Hobgoblins as they entered the fort.
Sure enough, as they passed into the fort a Fireball went off incinerating 12 Hobgoblins. The fort went quiet and the gate closed.
The party did a circuit of the fort and slave and cattle pens.
They noticed a small postern in the wall separating the fort from the slave pen.
At this point the party fell back to their rear FOB to consider next steps.
