409 - Aug 9
This session was heavy on administration which is not surprising given the size of Trajectum and the varied interests of the player characters.
The party left the mine at around 1200 on 9 August.
Upon reaching the gates of Trajectum (at 1800) the party was warmly welcomed by members of the 12th Legion who were on guard duty (though the Warblade did not get such a warm greeting due to his obstinate decision not to wear the silver fern badge provided by Ordo).
The party were escorted to the Palace to pay their respects to the Dux of the city - Arnulf.
They initially faced some obstruction from the Secretary of the Palace - an oily and somewhat limp wristed Romano-Gaul named Manlius.
Eventually they were taken to a large room in which a crude throne had been erected with gold plate nailed to it and precious gems stuck to the frame. Arnulf, a very large and dangerous looking Frankish barbarian in fancy chainmail, was surrounded by his Comes, loyal warriors. Female slaves wearing not very much were dancing in a somewhat listless fashion.
The party reported their success in clearing out the silver mine. Arnulf seemed unaware of the existence of the mine and Manlius was overheard trying to convince him the mine was long abandoned and of no consequence.
The party insisted that the mine had been run by an evil Necromancer and that two merchants (Merovic and Villexus) were involved in buying silver ore from the mine. In response to a demand for evidence of these claims the party produced the Necromancer's ledgers. Arnulf, somewhat embarassed, was clearly unable to read them (they were in Egyptian and, in any case, he is illiterate). Manlius was sent to fetch Marcus (a high level mage) and Licinius (a high level cleric of Jupiter) to examine the ledgers.
They duly arrived. Marcus, a man of obvious power and limitless arrogance, pronounced the ledgers as genuine.
When it dawned on Arnulf that he now controlled (sort of) a viable silver mine, he was delighted. He ordered that Licinius restore the Warblade's lost levels. He also offered the party an abandoned mansion in Trajectum and ordered Manlius to arrange it (Manlius was not pleased at this order). He also gave Scorpius one of the slave gilrs, a Sueve named Swintha (a young blonde with pocked skin - Charisma 13). Arnulf also ordered that food and wine be brought.
When the party was in full swing Aradec challenged one of the Franks to a dagger throwing contest. The Frank was quite drunk and proved inept and struggled to hit the target. Aradec managed to win some gold.
The Warblade was then taken to the Temple of Jupiter and had his levels restored. He was also given 4 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds.
The Paladin went looking for a shrine to Vulcan. He found one, a rather delapidated structure tended by a rather tatty priest called Colex. Colex revealed that the shrine had very few visitors. The Paladin donated 10gp to the shrine causing Colex to faint from shock.
The party then decided to spend the next three days (10 to 12 August) chasing up various issues.
Manlius was briefed on what sort of mansion was being sought and was told it needed to have 9 bedrooms, bathroom and lavatories, a kitchen, stabling for 12 horses, a shrine and a library.
The Druid conducted a reconnaissance of the Hobgoblin camp located 12 miles south west of Trajectum. It is made of cut pine logs and consists of the fort itself (180' by 200') with a 15 wide entrance with double gates. Walls 15' high with ramparts. Surrounded by a ditch 20' wide filled with sharpened stakes.
15-20 huts/lean-tos inside. Attached to the rear of the fort is a slave pen (90' square) and a cattle pen (100' square). Each has walls about 8' high of plashed wood.
Garrison is a Hobgoblin warband ("Gathorg's Gougers") made up of:
180 Hobgoblin Warriors
9x Sergenats
A senior commander
90 non-combatants
Gathorg (a very large Hobgoblin)
4x Dire Wolves
2x Ogres
.
The party hit the magic shops. Dell picked up a Ring of Cat's Grace for 1800gp which works for 10 rounds a day and gives +4 Dexterity. Trigger word "Petal" though this can also be used via thought as well as spoken word.
The Warblade sold the following items:
- Ring of Water Walking
- Staff of Charming
- Wand of Mage Armour
- Wand of Mirror Image
- Amulet of Neutralise Poison
- Amulet of Mage Armour
- Sleep Bracelet
- Lens of Bright Vision
- Sandals of Sprinting.
Scorpius visited Baphut (an Egyptian who runs one of the shops) and asked for a message to be sent to Hephor Apt (the Necromancer at the silver mine).
Scorpius also enquired about the availability of a Wand of Fireballs. One was available with 49 charges at a price of 26,000gp. Elendil agreed to hold it for 30 days.
The Paladin visited Sigurd and bought a +1 Dwarven War Axe for 2,330gp.
Session ended at dusk August12th.
