409 - Sep 1
Proceedings opened in the mid afternoon of 1 September. Dell will need 14 days to retrain his feats with the training period beginning on 2 September.
Tarryn liaised with Arnulf and arranged for a dinner party to be held at Arnulf's palace using his chef (Vettius).
Guests will be Durion, Lemnos, Filio, Iorex, Thuiné, Dell, Tarryn, Scorpius, Aicen, Alaricus, Aradec, and Commick. Total cost is 220gp.
Tarryn approached Alexodorus for a beginner's course on the Astral Planes. Alexodurus agreed to do this in two three hour sessions at a cost of 100gp. Tarryn wants to give him a gift worth 50gp and Alexodurus will let him know what might suit. Sadly Alexodurus does not have a pet cat.
Alaricus made a down payment of 1,000gp for a Headband +2. Aicen commissioned Philip to make his +1 Fish Armour with Wild Shape (cost 15,000gp).
Commick went to the temple of Vulcan to ask the High Priest (level 14 Cleric named Tullius) about Korkomenus. Tullius said the name was Greek and referred to a major devil. He believed the devil type was a Pit Fiend.
On 4 September Tarryn received a report from the Roman guards at the North Gate that a party that matched the description of the avenger party from Eboracum had passed through on 3 September.
On the 4th as Commick left the temple of Vulcan, accompanied by Aicen and her faithful weasel, they saw two suspicious characters glaring at them in the street. One was an enormous Half Orc and the other was a human Cleric of Arawn. It dawned on the adventurers that these must be Hrolf and Angmot from the evil party.
Battle ensued with Aicen taking on bear form, much to the dismay of people in the street. Angmot starting using fell magic clearly of an evil nature. He blasted Aicen with a black ray that caused serious necrotic damage. Upon being bitten by Aicen's weasel, he grabbed the creature and blasted it to dust.
Commick attempted to get help by running into the temple, but only succeeded in confusing two lowly priests engaged in dusting the entrance hall. Deciding he should help Aicen, he bravely returned to the street.
The adventurers got the upper hand and Hrolf and Angmot stepped back and suddenly vanished.
A Roman guard patrol turned up to investigate the fracas. Tullius explained that the adventurers were victims of an unprovoked attack and the guards went away mollified.
Aicen and Commick returned to the mansion for lunch with the rest of the party.
While enjoying their repast on a balcony overlooking the street, Alaricus detected a malevolent presence perched on the roof above the diners. Dell boosted Tarryn up and the Warblade was able to grab hold of the edge of the roof. He heard something invisible moving on the roof tiles followed by the sound of beating wings. In a most unlikely manoeuvre the Elf threw a dagger and managed to mortally wound an Imp.
Dragging the dying creature onto the balcony, it was stabilised. Commick attempted to remove its poison stinger, but totally botched the operation and almost killed the vicious little brute. It was saved by a quickly administered Cure Light Wounds from the bumbling Cleric.
The creature was interrogated. It revealed that it was named Tixit and worked for a wizard named Glarendon. It was clearly in contact with Glarendon (presumably operating as a Familiar) and Alaricus picked up its thoughts which indicated that it was anxious to ingratiate itself with the party.
The party decided to remove the stinger (successfully this time) then put it into a small wooden box which they would line with a lead sheet. The Imp would be restrained with silver manacles.
Subsequent to this, Aradec scanned the street. He caught a fleeting glimpse of a blurred green figure lurking in some eaves across the street, but it quickly vanished. Scorpius attempted to detect an invisible presence, but couldn't.
Scorpius then checked the street. He noticed a group of six disreputable looking youths lurking outside a nearby building clearly keeping the mansion under observation.
Going invisible the wizard entered the street and moved up to the group. Singling out the oldest looking youth, he cast Charm Monster which succeeded. He then appeared and asked the group to come to him. The charmed youth happily complied, but the other five louts ran off.
The youth provided to be a thug named Dolabella. He had been commissioned by Hudeoc (the Ranger/Assassin in the evil party) to watch the mansion. Their orders were to report to the Four Vagabonds Inn if any of the party numbering up to two left the mansion. They were also tasked with setting fire to the mansion that night.
Incensed by this perfidy, the party decided to hot foot it to the Four Vagabonds.
Dolabella led the party with Scorpius close behind (invisible naturally).
They reached the inn at about 1400. Scorpius snuck around the back while the others burst in through the front door.
They beheld the main room of the inn. 10 normal patrons were scattered through the room. Two members of the friendly party (Ulle - a monk and Syphax - a Fighter) were at a table. At the bar were two members of the evil party - Hudeoc and Juba.
A short brutal melee ensued. Hudeoc went down receiving brutal hits in combat plus being blasted by Scorching Rays.
Juba also took serious damage and made a run for the back door moving in a blur of speed. He saw Scorpius blocking the door and launched himself into a spectacular flying attack and smashed the wizard to the ground with a flurry of kicks and blows. The wizard had, however, prevented the Nubian Monk from getting away and he dropped dead to the ground after being eviscerated by Crystal Shards cast by Alaricus.
The party took Hudeoc prisoner after stabilising him, but took care to keep him unconscious. The party gave 50gp to the owner of the inn for damages and left for the mansion.
Session ended at 1500 on 4 September.
