409 - Sep 28
The session opened at 1800 on September 28.
The party made enquiries about getting Phillip resurrected and arranged for a visit to the Temple of Jupiter the following morning.
On 29 September the temple was visited. The High Priest was prepared to raise Phillip (using a scroll) for 12,000gp. This took place and Phillip was restored to lfe with no loss of level. This was significant as the High Priest was too low level to cast the spell (which is why he used the scroll) and the price charged was much lower than expected.
Phillip was very grateful but was understandably somewhat shaken and said he would need a day to recover.
Meanwhile Scorpius oversaw the interrogation of the Homunculous using the drugs specially bought for this purpose.
The creature was cooperative but still a bit evasive. It said it was obeying the instructions of Glarendon (an Mage in the evil party) and could communicate with him telepathically, but he was currently out of contact range. Scorpius assessed that the Homunculous probably belonged to another and more powerful magician who had "lent" it to Glarendon. Clearly some questions remained unanswered.
Scorpius had the Homunculous resealed in his leaden prison.
The party also caught up with the mage in the good party to try and get some information on Carcer Magnus. The following was gleaned:
- The prison is located about 80 miles east of Trajectum.
- It was built in 254AD for two purposes; to hold dangerous prisoners and to provide a secure location for Imperial Mages to conduct magical research and experiments.
- The prison consists of 10 storeys above and below ground (for a total of 20). It is 200 yards square. It is made of red bricks which looked remarkably pristine given the age of the building.
- It is located on a small island set in a lake of highly corrosive liquid. The good party saw some large creatures moving in the lake. The prison is reached by a causeway.
- The prison's entrance is via 2x10' steel doors.
- The good party had found a directory painted on a wall near the entrance which indicated the prison layout as follows:
ABOVE GROUND
Ground - Administration
1st Floor - Accommodation and research area/workshops for mages
2nd Floor - Garrison accommodation
3rd to 9th Floor - Low level prisoners
BELOW GROUND
1st Level - Humanoids
2nd Level - Player Character type prisoners (termed "adventurers/specialists)
3rd Level - Giant types
4th Level - Reptiles
5th Level - Fungi/Oozes
6th Level - Constructs
7th Level - Undead
8th Level - Dragonoids
9-10th Level - Extra-Planar
On 1 October with a hale but rather pale Phillip in tow, the party headed for the Prison.
RIding hard the party managed to travel 38 miles before camping. While setting up camp the party heard something large approaching the camp. Four Umber Hulks appeared and charged. The party quickly despatched the horrors.
Using tracking skills the party managed to find the monsters' lair. Within was 6,000sp, 4 gems with a total value of 551gp, 2 potions (Owl's Wisdom, Cure Light Wounds) and a Clear Ioun Stone (user needs no food or water).
Session ended at 2000 on 1 October.
