409 - Aug 26
The session opened at 1200 on August 26.
Aradec dealt with Sigurd to try and find a Wizard who could repair his acid-damaged leather armour.
Sigurd mentioned a level 7 Wizard named Phillip the Inspired, a rather dissolute man who was found visiting a certain Trajectum wineshop.
Aradec met the man (middle aged in a somewhat soiled green robe). A deal was struck whereby the Wizard would repair the armour for a cost of 1,000gp plus six pints of Falernian wine (each pint costing 50gp). Phillip said to deliver the armour on the 28th as he would be pretty hungover until then. He thought he could complete the work by the 30th.
The Druid showed Phillip the fish armour. He confirmed it was from a large fish but had no idea what type. He said it was in effect masterwork scaled armour and could be enchanted and he might do the work and could make it a +1 suit of mail for 1500gp.
On the 27th Dell, while walking in a crowded street in the Merchant Sector of Trajectum, was suddenly assailed by a terrible headache. At that moment a tall man in leather armour loomed up and introduced himself as Hudeoc. Standing behind him was a bald man of Egyptian appearance who was peering intently at Dell.
A short sharp melee ensued. Hudeoc was using an envenomed weapon. He failed to hit Dell, but where the venom touched Dell's armour, it left a burnt mark.
The bald man (who turned out to be Menon, an evil Psion), delivered another vicious mental attack (Mind Thrust) and Dell was really hurting. Bravely the warrior fought on and badly wounded Hudeoc who suddenly vanished though not before receiving a vicious wound from an opportunity attack delivered by Dell. Scorpius later opined that Hudeoc had used some sort of magic item to trigger a Dimension Door/Teleport spell.
Dell rushed up to Menon. The Psion attempted to cloud Dell's mind, but the brave fighter shook this off and disemboweled Menon. At this point Dell was arrested by a Roman military patrol.
He was detained for few hours. A message was sent to Arnulf to get him released. One of Arnulf's men found Scorpius who went to the jail and, blowing open the jail cell lock with a Magic Missile spell, browbeated the Roman guard into letting Dell go.
Arnulf later indicated that no further action would be taken against Dell, but expressed concern that the streets of Trajectum could be the scene of further bloody fights. Arnulf was told that Hudeoc and Menon were members of an evil party from Britain that were hunting the PCs and further violence could not be ruled out.
Later that day, Fiona (a Half Elf Wizard from the good party) called on Scorpius. She said the evil party had been overheard in a bar. They said that Menon had been killed and Hudeoc badly hurt and that they planned to leave Trajectum for a while. No indication was given of where they were going.
Menon proved to have three potions on him (Invisibility, Barkskin +3 and Blur) as well as a Ring of Protection +3. He also had a very fine ruby ring of Italian origin worth 12,000gp.
On the 30th Aradec got his armour back. It had been fully repaired and, in fact, was in pristine condition. Phillip may be a lush, but he is clearly a skilled craftsman. Aradec gave him two more pints of Falernian wine as a bonus.
On August 31st the party headed north west to the Schwarzwold Forest in search of Constantine's army.
The forest proved to be dense and rather foreboding. A few miles into the forest the Druid (in wolf form) came across a platform 30' above the trail in a tree. On the platform were six Hobgoblins. The Druid summoned an Ape which proceeded to wreak havoc amongst the hapless Hobgoblins. The party managed to capture one Hobgoblin who revealed that the platform was an observation post. The guards did eight hour shifts (starting at 0900). They had a horn which was supposed to be sounded if enemies were spotted. In the forest were roaming bands of scouts who would respond to the horn.
A highlight of the combat with the Hobgoblins was a remarkably inept display of tree climbing by Aradec.
It was noticed that the Hobgoblins all had crude necklaces consisting of a thong from which hung a crude "C" made from hammered iron. This apparently was worn by all members of Constantine's army.
Moving on the Druid came across two Hill Giants off the trail eating a Moose.
The party attacked the Giants with Scorpius casting a Slow spell to hinder the Giants Norrry casting a Silence spell to prevent any enemies hearing the combat.
The Giants were despatched. They had hidden under a log 1,000gp and a Staff of Size Alteration (41 charges). Each Giant also had a larger version of the "C" necklaces found on the Hobgoblins.
At this point the session ended. Time is 1430 on August 31.
Based on information provided by the Hobgoblin prisoner (who hasd been charmed by the Psion), the party think they are about 6 miles from a fortified hilltop which is the base of Constantine's army.
